ThinkFree is way cool! I signed up for an account earlier this week, and its web-based spreadsheet, word processor and slide presentation apps work beautifully. TJ Kang, the company's founder, has been developing office productivity software since the 1980s, and it shows.

Founded in 1999. ThinkFree spent its early years as a desktop software company. Its online edition was released in April 2005. Now the LA Library offers it on 2,200 computers across 71 branches, and NHN, a Korean telco with 20 million subscribers, has integrated the product with its email system. In addition, over 250,000 individual users have signed up for accounts.

Unlike Zoho, which offers an amazing breadth of hosted services, ThinkFree focuses on three applications - but makes them available in more forms than you can imagine. Let's count them:

1. The ThinkFree-hosted edition

2. The server edition (for self-hosting by enterprise customers and on-premise hosting by telco and ISP partners)

3. The iPod edition (so that you can travel with your sales presentation, but not your computer)

4. The USB edition (which allows you to edit documents on someone else's computer without leaving any trace of your work after you disconnect)

5. The upcoming premier edition (which allows synchronized online/offline document editing), and

6. The also upcoming SMB edition (which allows companies to create groups for different sets of employees to share different documents).

All of the above offer round trip compatibility with Microsoft Word/Excel/PowerPoint.

But I think what makes ThinkFree really, truly awesome is the company's idea of what SaaS should be like. VP Marketing Jonathan Crow says that one of his most important priorities is DocExchange, a shared repository of user-submitted documents. Because there's more to online collaboration than sharing documents with people you already know. It's also about leveraging and building upon the enormous amount of collective knowledge out there - knowledge that would have been inaccessible without SaaS. SlideShare and Swivel will have to watch out; as DocExchange evolves, ThinkFree users will be able to view public slides/datasets/documents - and reuse them on the spot.

This is as exciting as Amazon's EC2 machine image sharing announcement earlier this year. As Amazon puts it, sharing accelerates community-wide innovation. Not coincidentally, ThinkFree's document viewer runs on EC2, and DocExchange files are stored on S3. (SlideShare is an S3 customer as well.)

Earlier today Dennis Howlett wrote that being a Connector (in the Tipping Point sense) is part of every service provider's job description. Some connections are specific (you could introduce two customers to each other), others are sort of self-organizing (SlideShare making customer A's knowledge accessible to B, C and D through tags, auto-recommendations, etc), and still others are implicit (Freshbooks making aggregated invoice data available to customers within the same industry).

In the future of SaaS, I think, winning vendors will get ahead by being the best Connectors rather than the snazziest technology providers. (Which is why biggest community wins.) ThinkFree is well on its way. Google will most likely catch up. And Zoho; I'd bet on that. 1&1 CEO Andreas Gauger tells eWeek that he hopes to generate more SaaS than hosting revenues within 3-4 years. Could it happen? While he's got a sizable customer base, he's far from being in the Connector business. If I were him, I'd give TJ a call :)

(Note: This is a review of VPS hosting services provided by Web24 and Linode, and a migration of one of my sites from one to the other at the end of March 2008.)

Web24 — Virtuozzo VPS in Australia

Back in early this year I talked about writing a review on Web24.com.au, which I used to replace a VPS I got from GPLHost, which I terminated last December as I was using too much bandwidth (and was too cheap to pay :) The VPS I got from Web24 was their Silver package, a Virtuzzo Linux VPS running Ubuntu Linux, with 384MB guaranteed memory, over 6+GB of privvmpages (burstable memory), 50GB/month data transfer, and was located in Fujitsu data centre in Melbourne (see their profile on VPSAU). All these for under AUD$50/month — very affordable for my little sites.

Great Network, Great Uptime, Great Customer Service

Other than the Web24-wide connectivity issue back in February, their network has been rock solid. I am getting around 35ms from my home ADSL2+ to my VPS, and have used 30-40GB a month without issue.

My VPS there also had great uptime. It was up for the entire period — almost 120 days without rebooting. It has certainly demonstrated the stability of Virtuozzo. Hardware wise Web24 was using a 2.4Ghz Xeon with 4x physical core and 8GB of physical memory. However, cpulimit of my VPS has been set to 160% so I can only use around 960Mhz of each CPU core (and 4 cores at the same time), which is not bad at all. Web applications are rarely constrained by CPU power anyway.

Customer service wise — top notch, all the way from pre-sale to support. I have sent in a few support tickets and all of them have been answered in timely manner. GPLHost still has a better service though in my opinion because they are not only solving your problems, reporting back their progress, but also following up after the issues have been resolved.

Then There was Performance Issue

The main reason I am moving away from Web24 is performance, or lack of it. As I have said previously that the server CPUs have more than enough power, but my website over there has suffered much degraded performance throughout February and March, due to large amount of I/O wait.

First of all, what am I hosting there? A small-medium sized Drupal-based community site with around 5,000-7,000 visits per day, 800+k page views and 7.5 million hits per month. Lots of customisation and optimisation, and lots of fragment caching. Lighty on the front-end with 5x PHP+xcache/FastCGI processes (which is more than enough). MySQL 5 with a fat key buffer and query_cache_size to optimise on read requests. I am also trying to stay way below the memory limitation just to be on the safe side. In fact I usually use no more than 200MB under privvmpages. And I thought I was safe.

Not really.

Unfortunately I am not able to reproduce all the communications between Web24 support and myself (as I have a bad habit of deleting old emails), but most support issues I raised were performance related.

Swapping Swapping and Constantly Swapping

20 December 2007 evening, my VPS suddenly stopped responding. Yes it still responded to ICMP pings. Yes you can still connect to port 80, but PHP/FastCGI backend won’t load. SSH in took forever, and once I was in I checked the loadavg it went skyrocket. Type in free -m and I was shocked to discover that all the swap space has been exhausted. free, buffers and cached are all on single digit. Note that on Virtuozzo 3 UBC this is from meminfo of the host server, and has nothing to do with my own VPS. The host server was breathlessly swapping to cope with memory shortage. I cannot remember how long it lasted but it did resolve itself at the end, probably with OOM and some process slaughtering. It wasn’t pretty.

So in the middle of my panicking, I fired a support request. It was escalated and a few hours later someone responded saying it was a CPU issue rather than memory issue, and was caused by someone else’s VPS getting compromised. The swap space on the host server then got increased from 2GB to 12GB. I was trying to argue that it WAS a memory/swapping issue, and my processes cannot get enough CPU time because everyone was busy paging in and out! Nope. Web24 denied about it. The problem was with the CPU they said, which was definitely not what vmstat told me.

I/O Wait Issue Got Worse

Performance irregularity continued, and got worse around February and March. During peak hours (which for my site is 9am-11pm AEST), the 15-minute load average might go up to 4-5 for a period of 5-10 minutes every now and then, and my site would completely stall. 15-minute load average doesn’t drop back down below 0.5 during peak hours, and simple commands line ls feels sluggish — a sure sign of I/O wait issue. Swap usage on the host server has been ranging from 4GB-6GB (out of 12GB total swap space), and sometimes some of my key processes got swapped out even though I am only using half the guaranteed memory.

So I posted this question at WebHostingTalk (without mentioning who the provider was), and asked for opinions.

The question I would like to ask is — is it possible to pin-point why the VPS is slow? My apps are obviously not CPU bounded, and as iostat is not really working in Virtuozzo I cannot tell whether it is IO-bounded inside my VPS either. Is it possible to find out whether it is due to excessive paging on the physical server, so I can go to my provider and say, “hey you are overselling and you should not pack that many VE into a physical server”.

Well. I guess I got te message. Despite claims that “We do not overcommit on our VPS infrastructure”, looks like Web24 has just jammed too many people onto that host node. Or maybe my hypothesis with UBC-based VPS hosting is true — by providing 6+GB of burstable memory, you are basically inviting everyone to use as much as they want, and OOM won’t kick in until swap space has been exhausted — which would be probably too late. In that case they might not be overselling if they calculated with the amount of guaranteed memory, but poor UBC settings can still make you look bad. Not that I am going to be hosted with another UBC-based VPS provider anyway.

Moved to Linode

As traffic to my website has also been slowly growing, I was facing two choices — move up to the next plan, or move elsewhere (again). With the performance issues at Web24, I do not think moving up to the 512MB guaranteed plan will do any wonder. AUD$50/month is all I am willing to pay anyway, which means I won’t be able to find any virtual servers in Australia that will fit in my budget. With over 85% of traffic coming from Down Under, it makes sense to also host my site in Australia. But when budget becomes a constraint — well I guess I can live with a bit of latency.

As I still kept a Xen VPS at Linode after my review in January (yes, I actually became a customer), it is at Fremont CA which is “close enough” to Australia for me, I decided to make a migration from Web24 to Linode at the end of March.

So one evening I changed the DNS TTL to 15 minutes, put up a maintenance notice on my website, copy all the files across (which was less than 200MB), set everything up at Linode, make sure everything works, and update the DNS records to let them propagate. The next morning — traffic as usual, and everything “just works”. You do feel the lag typing inside a SSH session, but you cannot actually tell much difference with page serving. I guess the poor performance at Web24 sort of cancels out the benefit of low latency.

My community site has now been running for a month now at Linode and the performance has been great. In April it has been 8,000+ visitors/day and used around 62GB of data. Linode Platform Manager shows 4% of average CPU utilisation last month, and my Linode 360 uses little swap and always has 200+MB of (free + buffers + cached). 15 minute loadavg rarely goes above 0.1… 200GB/month of data transfer means it will probably last me a while.

Verdict

A few concluding points:

Don’t always believe what the support says. Gather your own evidence. Even a vmstat dump can point out roughly where the bottleneck is.

Xen >> Virtuozzo. Yes I know Matt is advertising here, but personally I still much prefer Xen than Virtuozzo. At least you get a virtualised block device where iostat can tell you how much I/O you are doing.

When you have high load on a Virtuozzo/OpenVZ VPS, adding more memory have no value by itself (despite many have suggested this at WHT). If you are CPU-bound (not likely) — check whether there’s a cpulimit on your VPS and ask your provider to remove it. If you are IO-bound (very likely), then you can go and get more memory PLUS implement aggressive caching throughout the stack so hopefully there is less load on the database, if you are the trouble maker.

If you are not the one causing the problem, or maybe optimisation is not your cup of tea, then prepare to jump ship.

Web24.com.au Connectivity Issue Right Now?

There seems to be some connectivity issue with regarding to my VPS at Web24 (profiled at VPS AU here) right now. For my websites hosted there, the heading will load, and then part of the content, and then the browser will just stall there trying to fetch the rest of the page but they never arrive.

Web24 is coloc at Fujitsu data centre in Melbourne, and a quite traceroute check with mtr shows around 20-40% packet loss at Fujitsu data centre.

I have posted the same issue on Whirlpool Forums and so far we have got no response from the provider. Web24.com.au and their HSPcomplete panel are hosted inside the same network thus neither are working at the moment. I can’t even get onto the support page to get the contact details (lucky there is Google cache).

Not happy Jen. Have to wait and see… Maybe it is a sign that I need to go to sleep now :)

Update 9AM AEST 27 Feb

I got a reply back from Web24 support this morning detailing the communication between Web24, Fujitsu and their up stream providers. Great job! Some paraphrased details:

Packet loss issue identified at 10:15pm on 26 February, and later found out it was an upstream router issue.

Web24 has been working with Fujitsu and Verizon in identifying and resolving the issue, and by 1:18am 27 February, the main web24 site failed over to US network (very good idea).

All the traffic are routing through secondary links by 4:45am, and still waiting for feedbacks on primary provider.

Pingdom still reports my site was down until around 8:20am. This is the graph generated from Cacti:

Note that the network does not appear to be down from 10pm onwards because the querying packets are small enough to get through. I guess network connectivity is going to be patchy this morning.

For the month december 2007, hostican uptime is above the uptime guarantee as well. This hostican review blog is hosted with hostican hosting using their shared hosting plan. Well, my first official review. In this review I will be covering a brief
outline of the hosting website, hostican.

I�ll start things off by simply saying, �wow.� In these first few days, I could
not be more pleased. I switched from using the hosting company HostMonster.com.
Let me confidently say that I made the right switch.

First things first, service. I had to call HostMonster about 2 times initially
when I joined them. What a pain! There was a line every time I needed to talk to
a representative, and I�ll add that their �Hold� music is just plain awful. When
I switched to hostican, I called them up, bam, talking with a person
immediately. No waits, no ear-ripping music, nothing except good �ol people to
talk to. Not to mention their demeanor and manners. I must say, my experience
with their service has up to this point been absolutely seamless.

Now lets move on to hosting. The best thing about their hosting, in my eyes, is
the simplicity of their two different plans. They are both relatively
inexpensive, come loaded with lots of useful features, and have some great
resources available. The base plan comes with 200GB of disk space, 2 domain
names, one FREE domain, 2,500GB of monthly bandwidth, along with being
e-commerce enabled. Impressive. Remember, that is just the basic plan, only
$6.95 per month.

Now I will admit I haven�t had a whole lot of time to mess around with the
control panel, however they do offer a demo control panel for anyone interested
in looking at that, just go to their site. Now there was one feature that
ultimately switched me to hostican - Wordpress. I�m sure there are lots of other
dedicated hosts that offer wordpress, but hostican made it so simple, it was
absolutely unbelievable. You just go onto control panel, click install
wordpress, and bam, there you go. Dont forget that hostican also provides tons
of free video tutorials on everything from setting up email addresses to
managing files in control panel. I however will only be using the WordPress
features, so the rest of the control panel is up to you to test.

The last thing I will write about for now that really grabbed my attention was
their affiliate program. It is quite amazing I must say. It�s free to setup, you
dont even have to have a domain hosted with them to make an account. Basically,
they pay you �X� amount of dollars per person that signs up using your unique
link. The rates are $70 for the first 4 people you get and $90 for everyone
after that (This resets every month). Also, you can get higher rates if you are
able to refer over 10 people every month. Talk about big money! I signed up for
this right away, and I have their advertisement in my top header that goes to my
unique link. If you sign up under that, you help me and you dont have to pay

Our company has been casually blogging for some time so now we have a good feel for what our customers like to see in this format. When our new website is released our blog will become a focal point of our site and a source for quality content on web hosting and applications. Company blogs will become more important in the next few years so you should start one now if you haven't already. While your business may already be well established, and perhaps even have a community forum with a good number of members, a blog can only further the connection with your customers. If you maintain quality posts on a regular basis, you'll really bag this new way of improving your public relations.

I have words of warning before you begin. I do see mistakes in existing company blogs out there, there are a few things that I believe should not be discussed. One of them is talking too much about your own products and services. That is what your website is for. No one wants to spend time reading about your services elsewhere only to see oddly placed sales pitches in the blog. It just doesn't fit. Your blog is a chance to point out something else about your company that is important but perhaps rarely noticed. You have to keep that in mind and be sure not to waste this opportunity.

You should also be sure to keep things as serious as possible no matter how fun you're feeling that day. (We all have those days when the idea seemed like a good one but later turned out to just be off the wall.) The company blog is a reflection of your business. So unless you are going for silly and wacky, try to keep things consistent. There is a time for humor in many situations, but you have to control the impression that visitors will receive after reading your blog. After reading only a few posts, a visitor will have developed an image of your company and its vision. Make sure that image is the one you want.

With your goals and image in mind, the question now is: who in your company is going to create these posts? You may want to discuss the new blog idea with your staff to uncover who could work well together for developing content and then the writing process could be handled separately. Having a quality blog is definitely a challenge and really should not be the responsibility of only one person. There is a way for any team to accomplish making a blog a success for your business.

And now I'm off to hopefully start taking my own advice!

Roger Waters (Pink Floyd)... amazing music + terrible politics?

Let's be honest: I love Pink Floyd's old music (Dark Side Of The Moon, The Wall etc) & I had the amazing privilege of having floor seats to his performance at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday Sept 12th!

To hear Roger Waters play his old Pink Floyd music is a dream come true for a fan like me. Knowing that he has recently released new music, my sole hope for this concert was that he'd play old music and none of his new music.

I was relieved to read in the pamphlet (which was placed on my seat) that the line-up for the night was 2 sets - the first set being a random assortment of old Pink Floyd music and the second being Dark Side Of The Moon in it's entirety with the original Pink Floyd drummer, Nick Mason!

The show started off amazingly, the music was amazing, the crowd was amazing and the song selection was amazing. Then Roger decided to let us know he'd be playing a new song "leaving Beirut" the song was literally just a musical version of a comic strip he wrote]... ok.... the words are obviously political and slanted... then comes "Oh George! Oh George! That Texas education must have f***d you up when you were very small" WHAT?

At that point I was furious... the song ended with half of Madison Square Garden booing Roger Waters. Politics aside, no one is paying to hear Roger Waters' political views or propaganda - everyone at MSG was there to hear his old Pink Floyd music, period.

The show progresses and during a lot of negative words/parts of songs, ("All that you hate"... "All that you distrust" etc) big pictures of President Bush were shown. Once again, politics aside, no one purchased Roger Waters tickets to hear his political views.

There is a reason that these people are musicians and not politicians. Musicians like him are simply abusing the fact that people like their music to portray their agendas and views.

I still love Roger Waters' old work & the Pink Floyd music, but boy do I hate the fact that he thinks he can use it to push a political agenda.

The story goes that the concept for "The Wall" came to Roger after he spit in the face of an unruly fan... perhaps it's time that the fans start spitting back.

This TV box has been staring me in the face --- I look at it often --- It turns on in the morning and I usually see it near bedtime. Between those bookends of life I stare at a computer screen. There is a break when I look at a smaller form with my Tilt phone. I am a communicator.

My e-mail saved me today when DTV4PC promised me 1,056 live channels on my PC. I have always wanted to watch live re-runs of the Mongolian version of The Price is Right.

If I owned a webhosting firm I would place one of my bets on TV, video hosting, streaming delivering or whatever...Adult purvayors (content providers) took the lead but now we are mainstreaming - streaming everything. This takes just what you want - people that want your stuff so you can deliver their stuff. Heavy demand on bandwidth, servers and everything else that generates revenues. Yes I would bet my bandwidth, technology, personnel, training, advertizing, reputation and all the cost centers to be a prime deliverer.

I want to test drive every car in a 3D, virtual world before I buy. Be able to look down and see where the cup holder is located.

You can either own content, or deliver content.

Last Thursday night, I came across this SearchStorage.com article via the Storagezilla blog. Beth Pariseau wrote that Amazon's Simple Storage Service (S3) has had "performance and reliability issues serious enough" to prompt second thoughts among early adopters. In particular, SmugMug CEO Don MacAskill recently decided to move hot storage back in-house.

The instant I finishing reading the article, my RSS reader lit up with Don's response. He still loves Amazon, even if S3 hasn't solved the "speed of light problem". It takes at least 60-80ms for bytes of data to travel the distance between SmugMug's west coast location and Amazon's east coast data center. There's no getting around that. He moved hot storage closer to his web servers NOT to solve Amazon's performance problems, but to reduce those thousands of miles to inches. Don also tracked down the Storagezilla post and added a comment there.

Fast forward to this morning, when someone sent me a snippet from a Tier 1 Research news brief in which Dan Golding wrote about Amazon's disillusioned users. I gave Dan a hard time for basing his article on the same two customers Beth interviewed without giving her credit. Dan argued that attribution isn't customary in the analyst world. Besides, we shouldn't even be having this conversation. As a non-subscriber, I should have deleted any T1R content that came my way upon receipt.

Ironically, during his HostingCon presentation last year, T1R founder Andy Schoepfer's key message was "don't be an island". It's important for web hosting providers to connect customers to external ecosystems like eBay and Amazon, because no e-business can thrive in isolation. Given T1R's Hosting 2.0 advocacy, Dan's reaction seemed... Analyst 1.0-ish. But towards the end of our conversation, he did promise that an upgrade is on the way. As a point of reference, Burton Group, Dan's former employer, has a great blog that links to external sources. Same goes for Forrester. And at least 220 other research firms, including T1R parent company The 451 Group. Raven Zachary, who leads 451's open source practice, is even on Twitter!

Anyway, I'll get off my soapbox now and back to Amazon. I think every web hosting exec needs to read Don's blog post - along with Robert Cichon's post on customer satisfaction metrics. Robert said a hosting provider has done a good job if (a) the company gets written testimonials, (b) customers refer other customers because they're happy with service quality, and (c) customers defend the company against negative remarks. Amazon gets three points based on Don's reaction. What's your score?

BusinessWeek reports that 1&1 will soon start deploying Open-Xchange mailboxes in Germany, followed by rollouts in the US, Britain and France. The article reports that 1&1 manages 5 million email accounts on behalf of 2.7 million web hosting customers. (This is wildly inconsistent with the 6 million hosting customers and 65 million emails accounts in 1&1's Business 2.0 ad. Maybe these figures include users from 1&1 parent company United Internet's Web.de and GMX portals business?)

With Open-Xchange's open source solution, 1&1 will be able to offer Microsoft Exchange-like features for $5 per user per month, versus its ~~$10-$15~~ $6.99 current price. BusinessWeek says this is "nothing but bad news" for Microsoft, but are Microsoft and Open-Xchange competing with each other? Or should both be worried that end users like Steve Rubel are turning Gmail into their personal nerve centers?

Steve is a senior VP at Edelman PR, an enormous organization that no doubt has an industrial strength email system, but Steve is hooked on Gmail because:

"Everyday I come across something on the web that I want to save for future reference... since I travel a lot, I need to access my bits from a mobile device. The latest version of the Google Toolbar has a send to Gmail function. Select some text or graphics, right click on it and send it to Gmail... Whammo - an instant personal database."

A friend who works at Microsoft says he can use his Windows Mobile phone to search his Exchange archive as well. But 10 GB Gmail accounts are available for $4.17 each per month (mobile client, website builder and web-based word processor and spreadsheet included). That's a 10x larger personal database compared with 1&1's 1GB allocation (Outlook 2003 and free domain name included).

Another important question is, to what extent will 1&1 be able to drive Open-Xchange adoption? Yes, as the world's largest hosting provider, 1&1 can deliver an enormous audience. But seeing is *not* deploying. As a point of reference, when I switched from (POP mail + Outlook + Blackberry) to (Google Apps + Gmail mobile) last week, I realized that despite the conveniently-located Google Start Page icon on my control panel, I still like Netvibes better. But thanks to the Gmail and Google Calendar widgets on Netvibes, I was able to piece together a best of all worlds solution.

If I were 1&1 CEO Andreas Gauger, I would think along the same lines and open up my community and technology platform.
Customer A might prefer Gmail + 1&1's website builder, while Customer B might choose Open-Xchange mail + Google Pages. Why not use widgets, RSS and open APIs to help each user concoct his perfect combination?

Today`s suggestion:

The hosting service works fine, although we have a very low volume of traffic
(less then 500mb a month). Unfortunately, from time to time, every few days, our
email would stop arriving. We wouldn't actually loose any mail, but email would
be delayed by as much as an hour sometimes. We complained about this to
ixwebhosting a few times through their online live chat help. No resolution
came, even though I even contacted them at the moment when our email was NOT
working - so they could experience the problem as well during 'live chat' help.
Later I recieved an email saying that they tested our email, and that we have no
problem and that ticket has been 'resolved' (not!). Just like every previous
time. They know it is an intermittent problem and they check once in a blue moon
and based on that conclude that everything is fine. So email problems stay
unresolved. Too bad, it seemed like a good deal and a good place for one's
hosting needs.
